Porto Conte Regional Natural Park

The ArchiMete Sardegna tourist center is located in the heart of the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park, one of the most fascinating natural areas in Sardinia, established in 1999 to protect a territory of extraordinary beauty extending over more than 5,000 hectares within the municipality of Alghero. Here, nature offers spectacular and diverse landscapes: from the wild coastline to the gentle inland hills, creating a succession of settings ideal for excursions, outdoor activities and moments of pure relaxation surrounded by greenery.

The coastal area of the park stretches between the majestic headlands of Capo Caccia and Punta Giglio, and is characterized by impressive limestone cliffs overlooking the sea, alternating with softer and more panoramic rocky stretches.

The inland area, on the other hand, is dominated by hills covered in Mediterranean scrub and small clearings where it is easy to spot animals living in the wild, such as wild boars, deer, fallow deer, weasels and hedgehogs.

A short distance from the tourist center lies the evocative Le Prigionette State Forest, also known as the “Noah’s Ark”, where you can also encounter the characteristic white donkeys native to the Island of Asinara.

A few kilometers to the north is Lake Baratz, the only natural lake on the island and a popular destination for trekking, mountain biking and horse riding along the trails in the Porto Ferro area.

Despite its relatively small size, the lake represents a valuable natural ecosystem: along its shores, Mediterranean vegetation grows abundantly, including rockrose, myrtle, lavender, wild rosemary and strawberry tree, while among the shrubs it is possible to observe birds such as coots and mallards. On the water’s surface, it is also not uncommon to spot shy freshwater turtles.

Another area of great natural interest is the Calich Lagoon, located at the western entrance of Alghero, near Fertilia. This lagoon, included within the regional park, hosts numerous plant and animal species and preserves important historical remains, such as the ancient Roman bridge and the nearby Roman Villa of Sant’Imbenia, one of the few traces from the imperial era found in the area.

The Porto Conte area is also a true archaeological treasure, telling a story that spans over 6,000 years.

In the surrounding area, there are important pre-Nuragic and Nuragic sites easily reachable from the ArchiMete Sardegna tourist center, including the Anghelu Ruju Necropolis, the Santu Pedru Necropolis and the Nuraghe Palmavera complex.

In particular, in the Sant’Imbenia area, as early as the 9th century BC, the Phoenicians established an important trading port, taking advantage of the natural shelter of the Porto Conte bay and the presence of freshwater springs.

Today, this territory represents an extraordinary combination of nature, history and archaeology, perfect for those who wish to discover the most authentic side of Sardinia through unspoiled landscapes, nature trails and ancient heritage.
