Have you ever entered the interior of a mountain through an underwater trail? It’s an indescribable feeling that can be experienced in few places in the world. The Capo Caccia – Isola Piana Marine Area, just a stone’s throw from Alghero, Sardinia, is one of them.
It is here, in fact, that nature, with the incessant and careful work of millennia, has shaped some of the most extraordinary underwater caves in the world. Many are absolutely fascinating and unique, like the Falco Cave.
A pearl in the marvelous necklace of the Marine Area’s numerous dive sites, which contribute to the naturalistic and historical richness of an area that also benefits from the protection of the Porto Conte Land Park.
The Falco Cave is in the heart of the Punta Giglio karst complex, in the southeastern part of the Land Park, and the excursion must be planned with authorized diving centers and, above all, expert guides who know every inch of rock.
your own pockets.
The dive is spectacular right from the start, as you dive under the vault of a large
semi-submerged cave that invites you to discover the blue seabed below.
The descent is rapid, as you only need to reach a depth of about 10 meters to enter the short tunnel leading to the cave. And it’s at the end of this passage that the first surprise awaits: a small lake opening up in the heart of the rock face. Here, it’s perpetual night, pitch black, but the click of an underwater light illuminates the interior and leaves you speechless. And not just figuratively: in the cave, you can abandon your regulator and breathe normally, as cracks in the rock at the top of the cliff ensure a constant exchange of air.
After inflating your BCDs and leaving your gear on the shore of the lake, you can carefully venture into the cave (the rock is wet and very slippery) for at least fifty meters. It’s a walk you won’t soon forget, as the ceiling is adorned with stalactites and calcite arabesques, stalagmite formations, lacework, and spectacular calcite blades. A true paradise that never disappoints diving enthusiasts seeking original and unusual dives.
Here are some helpful tips: rely on recognized diving centers with experienced, regular dive guides who can advise you on when and how to best conduct your dive. Cave diving requires an advanced certification and a minimum amount of experience to fully enjoy this type of diving. Ready to plan a dive?
